German Exchange Program

students studying

The graduate exchange has had a “home base” in the Genetics and Genome Sciences Graduate Program. The German graduate students come to MSU to pursue research in the area “Dynamic Responses of Plants to the Environment” through a program referred to as iGRAD-Plant, which is supported by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) to the Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf (HHUD). The intention of the grant program is to foster international research careers at an early stage and support collaborative research. The German students spend 6-9 months in a research program at MSU, while the MSU students are encouraged to undertake one or two semesters of research in the cooperating German labs. In addition to supporting the German graduate students during their time at MSU, the iGRAD-Plant Training Program has funds for a seminar exchange and for workshops and retreats for the collaborating faculty and students. An undergraduate molecular biology exchange program has been developed to complement the graduate program. Through its Study Abroad Program, MSU undergraduates participate in a summer research experience at the HHUD, while HHUD pre-baccalaureate students enroll as students at MSU for a 9-month combined classroom and research experience.
